Jaden Smith, SYRE

SYRE is without a doubt one of the best debut albums that I have heard in a while. I am not however surprised by this, as I have been a fan of Jaden Smith’s music for awhile.

Where to start that from the beginning with his collaboration track with Justin Bieber for his debut solo film Karate Kid. The high pitched, body popping lad was who many of us first saw, after that he went a little quiet for a few years. Then started making music, and unless you followed him, you wouldn’t have known that he was into music and was perusing it as a career. We have seen him do features with other artist like; Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Alessia Cara, and A$AP MOB. These features would have definitely helped in him gaining some credit. Most people wouldn’t have taken him seriously being the child of Will Smith, he had to prove himself and come out of the musical shadow of his father. I personally think he should focus on the music more than the acting. In this day and age though, you need to be multitalented so keep doing it all brother.

Like most musicians they make music that is inspired by their dreams, life experiences, and imagination. In this early stage his influences were youth issues, and a broken heart. From mind the tracks that got me where BLUE Ocean V19 which featured Willow Smith. This track helped me with my girl issues for real. It really struck a chord with me and I could relate to it.

His EP which he later released via an app named, Jaden Experience and app which I still have since its release. The EP has great tracks like PCH, FIRE, KEEP YA LOVE, LET IT BREATHE. The selected tracks from this EP would definitely make it into his debut album. Creatively he collaborated a lot with his friend Téo who I am assuming is a part of his MSFT’s team. There few other tracks that he first released that are worth a mention but I’ll let you discover them when you’re searching through his history. One thing that I have to say is that from the beginning he always had his own sound, that has carried on through to his studio debut album.

Ninety, a track from the new album SYRE has a similar vibe and sound to his Blue Ocean V2. The melancholic synthetic sound, with thumping beats. Layered with his crisp heavy-hearted vocals. To be honest most of the tracks on this album have this very similar sound. This album certainly from the get go was a good listen, but once you've listened to it time and time again, it grows on you.

To the album, SYRE. It’s got a great balance of sombre emotional tracks then flows into that hard trap beat tracks. The transition is smooth.I have however read a lot of negative reviews regarding the Jaden’s album. To quote a few, “SYRE. Full of chaotic beats and cringe-worthy lyrics, the debut studio album from Jaden Smith is a sophistic, paranoid fantasy that mixes new-age thinking with apocalyptic rhetoric.” This from Pitchfork, followed by what NME said, “Sadly, it doesn’t always play out that way. ‘Ninety’ is a seven-minute, post-breakup odyssey lacking direction, further let down by Smith’s biggest weakness: his lyricism. “I’m at the SOHO House / If you wanna come through, there’s a seat just for you,” he sings, like he’s writing a sappy Valentine’s Day card.” His words fail him from time to time, but I guess you should only expect that as he is of course only 19. He has potential and that is what SYRE shows. Listen to the album and make of it what you will!

On a side note, this is a funny observation I’ve made. Within every moment in his career he has a certain style, I can pin point when a particular track was released based on a picture of him. Does that make sense?
